MassMutual Undergraduate Fellowship in Complex Systems and Data Science


We are very excited to announce the 2020 MassMutual Undergraduate Fellowship Program in Complex Systems and Data Science.

This undergraduate fellowship will be funded by our groundbreaking data science partnership with MassMutual. The MassMutual Center of Excellence for Complex Systems and Data Science will initiate research projects and programs aimed at better understanding human wellness through data analytics.

Program Overview

Program Overview:

This summer research experience is a ten-week residential program where undergraduate fellows will conduct research projects with faculty mentors from the UVM Complex Systems Center. Fellows will be expected to spend nine-weeks in Burlington, Vermont at the University of Vermont with the Complex Systems Center faculty and one in Amherst, Massachusetts with the MassMutual Data Science team, a unique experience to work in both an academic and industry setting. Research projects that will be conducted through the MassMutual Center of Excellence include study in the following areas:

-Longevity and wellness, including the link between physical and financial health and environmental impacts on wellness.

-Algorithmic fairness, accountability and transparency, which will encompass alternative underwriting data, methods for controlling bias and data ethics.

-Measurement methodologies for large scale social systems, covering such topics as macroeconomic events, mortality risk and social cohesion, among others.

-Computational Finance

Program Details

Summer Intern Expectations:

- A one page abstract of your research project by June 19
- A Final Paper: (5-10 pages in length) in the format for a journal you would aim to publish in. Due August 14th at Midnight
- Final Presentation: 30 minute talk presented to the CoE team on August 14th

Lead Mentors:

Chris Danforth
Flint Professor of Mathematical, Natural, and Technical Sciences, Department of Mathematics and Statistics - Chris is an applied mathematician interested in modeling a variety of physical, biological, and social phenomenon. He has applied principles of chaos theory to improve weather forecasts as a member of the Mathematics and Climate Research Network, and developed a real-time remote sensor of global happiness using messages from Twitter: the Hedonometer. Danforth co-runs the Computational Story Lab with Peter Dodds.

Peter Sheridan Dodds
Director, Vermont Complex Systems Center - Peter's research focuses on system-level, big data problems in many areas including language and stories, sociotechnical systems, Earth sciences, biology, and ecology. Peter has created (and constantly evolves) a series of complex systems courses starting with Principles of Complex Systems. He co-runs the Computational Story Lab with Chris Danforth.

Program Support:

A competitive living and housing stipend will be provided to each student in the program. Travel support will be offered to non-local participants.


Application Deadline: March 23, 2020

Eligibility: Undergraduates currently enrolled in a degree program leading to a bachelor's degree from any country. Women and minority students are encouraged to apply.
