Title: The role of causal inference and machine learning in engineering complex systems.

All are welcome!

Abstract:
Modern Internet services are fundamentally complex systems, in which individuals’ behaviors are shaped by countless interactions between people and technology. How can we reason about such systems to make sound design, engineering, and strategic decisions? I discuss how causal inference, with the aid of machine learning, can be used to anticipate the effects of thousands of potential changes. Through examples of field experiments conducted at Facebook, I will illustrate the importance of causal inference in decision making, as well as recent research on adaptive experimental design.
